September 12, 2015

Program: Water Issues and the California Drought, John Laird

Presenter: John needs no introduction to our community. Indeed, a peek at his Wikipedia entry, first posted in 2006, shows a growing crescendo of accomplishments. Just a sample: running for City Council in 1981, as (was then termed) “an avowed homosexual”, being the first openly gay mayor, founding member and later executive director of the Santa Cruz AIDS Project, KUSP radio host and one of the first two openly gay men elected in 2002 to the California Assembly. These are mere examples of John’s pioneering courage – putting one foot forward at a time and acclimating people to the normalcy of LGBTQ+ people. His interests have included the environment and budgets. The former led to his current appointment in 2011 as California’s Secretary of Natural Resources. He will speak on California’s current water crisis and update us on the drought that has plagued us for the past four years. Will El Nino relieve our stressed aquifers?
