Day of Decision for Marriage Equality:

When the Court decides, we must act!

Day of US Supreme Court Decision on Proposition 8 and Marriage Equality

Date: TO BE ANNOUNCED

Time: 5:30-7:00 pm

Location: Santa Cruz County Courthouse Steps, 701 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz

Sometime between today and and the end of its term, the United States Supreme Court will make decisions on two of its most important civil rights cases in decades: Hollingsworth v Perry, challenging Proposition 8; and Windsor v United States, challenging Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), federally. On the evening of those decisions, supporters of marriage equality will gather at 5:30 pm on the steps of the Santa Cruz County Courthouse, at 701 Ocean Street in Santa Cruz for a rally sponsored by The GLBT Alliance of Santa Cruz County and The Diversity Center.

Speakers for the rally include local legal experts who will explain the known civil rights ramifications, based on the Supreme Court's decisions; Gail Pellerin, Santa Cruz County Clerk, or a member of her staff; as well as people directly affected by the Supreme Court decisions. The message of the rally will depend on the rulings made by the Supreme Court, but will either be in celebration of Supreme Court decisions that allow for equal protection for same-sex couples under the law, or in protest of Supreme Court decisions that weaken civil rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in California and throughout the nation.
