The Diversity Center is looking for a few more treasures from our local LGBTQ+ history to add to the new LGBTQ+ archive at the MAH

The MAH's Curator of Collections, Marla Novo, holds a flag for A Gay Evening in May (AGEM) in the 1980s and Diversity Center Board member, Pat Dellin, holds an original flyer from the first Santa Cruz Pride in 1975, part of the new LGBTQ archives at the MAH.

The Museum of Art and History (MAH) has agreed to accept a selection of documents and artifacts from our local LGBTQ+ history into its archives, where these treasures will be protected, catalogued and available for viewing and research.  The Diversity Center is assembling the items for the MAH archives, and we want your help in locating a few more treasures to add to the archive.

Go back into your closet and see if you have any of the following LGBTQ+ items from Santa Cruz County that you might want to donate to the archive:

Flyers, posters, banners, political signs, event programs, ticket stubs, city and county proclamations, brochures, tshirts, buttons, publications and/or film/video from local LGBTQ+ events, rallies, organizations.

e are especially interested in more local LGBTQ+ political signs, adding to our incomplete collection of Santa Cruz Pride programs and flyers, and getting the 1985 and 86 programs for A Gay Evening in May (AGEM). We are mainly interested in items from the 1970s and 80s.

Please contact Pat at patinsantacruz@yahoo.com before April 20th to tell us about your potential donation, and she will let you know if we can use your item for the archive. Do not mail or drop off anything at the Diversity Center or MAH.

The MAH has limited space for its archive, so we must be very selective in what new items are accepted into the archive.  Also, we need just one copy of every item for the archive, so we can only accept items we don’t already have.  FYI, we already have complete sets of many publications, including Lavender Reader, Matrix andRubyfruit Reader, plus tons of photos.

We are not accepting at this time:

·           Photos – except we could use more photos of people protesting against LGBTQ+ people in Santa Cruz, or if you have a single great photograph

·           Newspaper clippings or copies of mainstream papers

·           Items from LGBTQ+ events or publications from outside of Santa Cruz County

The assembling of our Santa Cruz County LGBTQ+ archive at the MAH is part of the Diversity Center’s Trailblazer History Project. FYI, we plan to do another round of Lifetime Achievement Awards and hold another Trailblazers Reception in 2016. The Diversity Center will make an announcement when the nomination process opens.

Thank you!!!! For helping the Diversity Center and the MAH find some more treasures for the LGBTQ+ archive. And a big thank you to those of you who have already contributed items or photos to the archive, including Jennifer Meyer and Claire Moore (Matrix), Scott Brookie (Lavender Reader), Tracye Lea Lawson (women’s events), Mindy Storch, Sean Laughingtree, Tom Ellison and Larry Friedman, Mark Grantham and Mike Tossy. Chris Weir, Bob Correa, Dean Silvers, Matt Friday and Bruce Carlson, Mary McFaul and Tarey Dunn. Plus many more…..
