Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil

Join us downtown for an intimate candlelit vigil to commemorate transgender members of our community who we've lost. As many know, transgender folks, (transgender women of color in particular) are highly marginalized members of our community and are far too often targets of discrimination and violence. LGBTQ+ folks, allies, friends and families are welcome to come share a few words, light a candle, show solidarity and celebrate the lives of those lost!

The vigil will be held at the Santa Cruz clocktower near the Lighthouse bank on North Pacific.

Contra dancing is an American folk form that evolved out of English country dancing and French quadrilles and is a close cousin to American square dancing. This is a community social dance that requires no prior experience. Bring a friend or come alone. Folks change partners with each new dance. There is always live music and a Caller teaching and prompting each dance.

All individuals are encouraged to explore their individual selves, without concern or pressure that the next step need be ‘transitioning,’ and without concern about fitting into other people's definitions. Make up your own! The Diversity Center's GenderQueer Peer Support Group provides a supportive and interactive experience at the center. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. Facilitators are Robin Sanderson and Ezra Bowen.

Lively English Country Dance

We use the gender-neutral terms Larks and Ravens to teach and call this fun traditional dance of England. You can dance and/or play music with our open band. This dance style is the "grandmother" of Square Dance and Contra Dance. Come make new friends, get some exercise and have a lot of fun! Second Thursday every month.
